What is Microsoft Clarity?
Microsoft Clarity is a free behavioral analytics tool providing heatmaps, session recordings, and frustration signals such as rage clicks and dead clicks. It covers the diagnostic layer that measurement tools like GA4 cannot see, and for a Webflow marketing site it is often sufficient without further purchase.
What does Clarity provide?
Heatmaps. Generated automatically from tracked sessions without per-page configuration. Which map types Clarity ships, and what Microsoft calls each one, has changed over time, so take the current list from Clarity's own documentation rather than from a third party page.
Session recordings. Filterable, with the ability to jump from a heatmap into the matching sessions.
Frustration signals.Rage clicks, dead clicks, excessive scrolling, and quick backs, usable as filters across both heatmaps and recordings. This is the fastest route from data to a defect worth fixing.
Segmentation by device, browser, country, source, and custom tags.
GA4 integration, so Clarity recordings can be reached from analytics segments.
The pricing model is the unusual part. Clarity is free at every traffic level, with no session cap and no paid tier to upgrade to, at the time of writing in August 2026. Pricing and packaging can change, so confirm current terms before you build a plan on them. Microsoft processes the data Clarity collects under its own terms, so read those terms before adopting rather than after.
Where does Clarity fall short?
Stated plainly, because these determine when a paid tool is warranted.
No dedicated form analytics report. You can filter recordings to sessions that engaged a form and did not submit, and watch where they stopped. That works and it is slower than a field-level drop-off report. See form analytics.
URL pattern grouping across CMS templates. A Collection template spreads across many item URLs, and unless a tool groups them under one pattern the traffic fragments into thin per-page heatmaps. For a content-heavy Webflow site this is the capability that decides whether page-level analysis works on the blog at all, so test it against your own Collection URLs during evaluation.
No A/B testing. Diagnosis only. Pair it with Webflow Optimize or an external platform.
Shallower segmentation than paid alternatives once you need complex custom attributes.
Microsoft as processor. In healthtech, fintech, and other regulated sectors, confirm that fits your processing agreements before installing the script.
The gaps sit in analysis depth and CMS handling. The core diagnostic capability, seeing what visitors did on a page, is there and it is free.
How do you set it up on Webflow?
- Create a Clarity project and copy the tracking snippet.
- In the Webflow Designer, open Site Settings, Custom Code, Head Code and paste it.
- Publish. Custom code does not run in the Designer canvas or preview mode.
- Filter out the
.webflow.iostaging domain so internal QA does not pollute the sample. - Verify masking by submitting a test form entry and inspecting the recording.
- Wait for traffic before opening the heatmaps. A thin sample produces a pattern that changes with every new session. See website heatmap for working thresholds by map type.
Two Webflow specifics to settle in week one: check whether your Collection templates fragment into per-item heatmaps, since that decides whether page-level analysis works on your content pages, and confirm conversion tracking, since Webflow's in-place form success produces no page load for a destination-based conversion to detect.

FAQ
Is Microsoft Clarity really free?
Yes, at the time of writing in August 2026: free to use at any traffic level, with no paid tier to upgrade to. Confirm current terms before you commit, since vendor packaging changes. Microsoft processes the data it collects under its own terms, which is the part to read before installing rather than after.
Is Clarity GDPR compliant?
It provides masking, retention, and consent controls, and compliance depends on your configuration and lawful basis. Data is processed by Microsoft, which is a factor to weigh in regulated sectors.
Clarity or Hotjar?
Clarity when the questions are behavioral and the budget is zero. Hotjar when you will use the built-in surveys and feedback widgets, since putting a question to the segment you have been watching is the thing Clarity cannot do. Starting with Clarity and adding a paid tool against a specific blocked decision is the lower-risk order.
Does Clarity slow down a site?
It adds a tracking script, so the answer is measurable rather than theoretical. Compare a real page with and without the script on a throttled connection before accepting that the impact is negligible.
