What is Hotjar?

Hotjar is a behavioral analytics platform combining heatmaps, session recordings, on-site surveys, and feedback widgets in one product. Its distinguishing strength is bundling qualitative research tools with behavioral data, so the "where" and the "why" live in the same place.

What does Hotjar do well?

Integrated qualitative tooling. On-site surveys and feedback widgets alongside heatmaps and recordings. Behavioral tools and research tools are usually separate purchases, so seeing a visitor struggle and then asking that same segment a question, without a second vendor and a second script, is the strongest reason to choose Hotjar.

Interface quality. The analysis experience is mature and approachable for non-specialists, which matters when the people who need the insight are not analysts.

Highlights and sharing. Clipping a moment from a recording, annotating it, and sending it to a stakeholder is well handled. A clip of one visitor failing at a step is easier to act on than an aggregate number describing the same failure.

Funnels and trends, connecting page-level behavior to progression through a flow, on the plans that include them.

Ecosystem maturity. Long established, widely integrated, extensively documented, and part of Contentsquare, which has expanded the enterprise side of the offering.

Where are the constraints?

Session volume drives the price. Plans are structured around captured sessions per period, so a growing site moves up tiers as traffic grows rather than as its needs change. Model it against your actual sessions before committing, and take the allowances from Hotjar's current pricing page rather than from any third party summary.

A capped free tier, which suits evaluation and a small site and runs out on a growing one.

Sampling below the top plans, meaning not every session is captured, so a rare failure mode can be missed.

CMS URL fragmentation applies here as across the category. Check how your Webflow Collection templates are handled during the trial.

Hotjar earns its cost on integrated qualitative research and the analysis experience around it. A team that will not use the survey and feedback side is paying for capability it already has for free elsewhere, which is a question to settle before the trial rather than at renewal.

Choose Hotjar when integrated surveys and feedback matter, when non-specialists will be doing the analysis themselves, or when you need its funnel reporting.

Choose Clarity when session volume is high and budget is not, or when the questions are behavioral rather than attitudinal.

Running both is defensible during an evaluation and hard to defend after it. Two behavioral tools in parallel add page weight twice and report numbers that will not match.

FAQ

Is Hotjar free?

There is a capped free tier, suitable for evaluation and a small site. Paid plans are priced by session volume, which is the constraint that decides the cost as traffic grows. Check current allowances at hotjar.com, since plan packaging changes.

Does Hotjar do A/B testing?

No. It is a diagnostic and research tool. Pair it with a testing platform such as Webflow Optimize or an external product. See A/B testing tools.

Can you install Hotjar on Webflow?

Yes. Paste the tracking snippet in Site Settings, Custom Code, Head Code, then publish. Custom code does not run in the Designer canvas or preview mode, so verify on the published site.
